The Local Pig Butchery
The rising cost of beef, mutton, and goat meat due to recurring droughts has led communities to seek alternative sources of protein, with pork emerging as a viable option. Unlike fish, which many find monotonous, pork offers variety, health benefits, and affordability. Despite the presence of many small-scale pig farmers in rural Namibia, limited access to formal markets and lack of slaughter facilities hinder their growth. Recognised retailers often overlook these farmers, who also lack capital and infrastructure to scale their operations. The 2014 National Agricultural Census by NSA recorded over 87,000 pigs in Namibia, with more than half in communal areas.
